LionDx brings 'revolutionary test' for sepsis to Italy
Agreement signed with Australian Microbio
LionDx, an Italian company engaged in molecular diagnostics based in Pordenone, has signed an agreement with Australia-based Microbio to distribute a test for detecting pathogens that cause sepsis. It is, the Friuli-based company explains, a “unique and revolutionary test, as it is highly sensitive and suitable even for small pediatric patients.” The test is capable of identifying as many as 26 different pathogens from less than 0.5 milliliters of blood, an amount equal to about one-tenth of a teaspoon, which makes the sampling “noninvasive” and “addressable by both children and immunocompromised patients.”
The collaboration between the two companies will make it possible to provide Italian hospitals with “advanced diagnostic tools capable of drastically improving the chances of survival of sepsis patients, responding more quickly and effectively to one of the greatest challenges of modern medicine.”
Every year, sepsis kills 11 million people worldwide, and in Italy alone there are about 20 deaths a day. But it’s not just adults we’re talking about: infants, especially premature babies, and children under 5 are among the groups most vulnerable to sepsis. According to various estimates, about 40 percent of sepsis cases worldwide involve children under the age of 5, with mortality rates ranging from 5 percent to 20 percent, depending on severity and timeliness of diagnosis.
Sepsis is an inflammatory response of the body to an infection that can lead to organ failure and if not treated quickly, can prove fatal. Hence the importance of early diagnosis and timely, targeted treatment that can increase the chances of survival.
